Since 1994, Professor Herbert Pfister is the Head of the Institute of Virology in Cologne, Germany. Since 2009 he is Chairman of the National Reference Center for Papilloma- and Polyomaviruses. He got his PhD in Biology at University of Erlangen Nürnberg in 1974. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Prof. zur Hausen at the Universities of Erlangen and Freiburg and from 1982 to 1994 as Professor of Virology at University of Erlangen Nürnberg. He is an expert in the field of human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated carcinogenesis. His main scientific achievements are: description of molecular mechanisms of early stages in cutaneous oncogenesis related to HPV and UV irradiation. Professor Pfister is an author of more than 200 peer-reviewed publications. Citation number >6000, h index=47.
